In adipose tissues (body fat), curcumin suppresses angiogenesis, which is essential for tissue growth and together with the effects on lipid metabolic process in adipocytes. Curcumin anti-obesity agent lowers body fat and reduces weight.
Curcumin may also make improvements to obesity-associated inflammation along with other metabolic disorders such as hyperglycemia, insulin resistance, hyperlipidemia, and hypercholesterolemia. A different study indicates that curcumin helps to protect from liver injury preventing Low-Density Lipoproteins (LDL) oxidation by controlling the harmful leptin which helps to regulate energy intake-implicated in liver fibrosis.
An ‘In-Vivo’ study proved that curcumin ameliorates some indicator related to diabetes and leptin-deficiency. Curcumin treatment also significantly decreases macrophage infiltration of white adipose tissue, elevates adipose tissue adiponectic generation and reduces hepatic NF-kB activity and markers of hepatic inflammation. Curcumin also induces reduction of adipogenic differentiation by activation of Wnt/ß-Catenin signalling.
Curcumin also directly interacts with adipocytes, pancreatic cells, hepatic stellate cells, muscles and immune system macrophages thus assists in reducing leptin resistance, enhances adiponectin and lowers various inflammatory indicators associated with obesity which includes TNF-a, IL-6, resistin, leptin and MCP-1.
Curcumin, A Promising Anti-Obesity Agent
Based on the evidences stated earlier, it can be concluded that turmeric’s curcumin is a promising anti-obesity agent which also helps in weight loss. This shows that by bringing out the best from nature, we could have the remedies that might be beneficial as protection and treatment for a variety of conditions faced by mankind.
The search for the Anti-Obesity Agent could probably ends with the discovery of curcumin in the spice turmeric.
